International Trade and Poverty Reduction in Africa-An Evaluation Term Paper

International Trade and Poverty Reduction in Africa-An Evaluation - Term Paper Example Ng and Yeats (1996) showed that Sub Saharan Africa showed very poor performance in terms of global exports and the share of exports in world trade had been falling here since the 1950s. The authors argue the protectionist policies of the government here leading to the marginalization of the region from world trade and hence it remained non-competitive. The empirical analysis by the authors showed that the trade preferences of OECD provided a competitive advantage for Africa while the internal protectionist policies significantly contributed to the decline of the export performance here. The study hence demands the need for more liberalized trade policies in this region which are needed to reduce poverty in Sub Saharan Africa. Anderson et al showed that trade liberalization can result in poverty reduction in Sub Saharan Africa through increasing farm employment and output, the real value of agricultural and food exports, the real returns to farm land and unskilled labor, and real net farm incomes. It also results in increased income growth, which is greater than for other developing nations and developed nations as shown by the authors in spite of some terms of trade losses. Hence, the authors demanded the need for more trade openness in the region as a policy measure to reduce poverty. Similarly, Tuppy argued that in Sub Saharan Africa trade liberalization can produce welfare gains while this, in turn, will lead to reduced poverty only if there are drastic changes in the economic and political circumstances.

A View From A Bridge Coursework Essay Example for Free

A View From A Bridge Coursework Essay Explore the dramatic use of Alfieri in A view from the Bridge. What is his dramatic significance in the play? Arthur Miller was an American playwright, essayist and author. He was born in New York City on October 17th 1915. He lived with his mother and father, who were Jewish, in New York City. His father was a womens clothing manufacturer while his mother was a schoolteacher. The family were rich until the stock market crash of 1929 when they lost most of their money. They were then forced to move into Brooklyn, a very poor district where a lot of legal and illegal immigrants lived and where a lot of crime would happen. Miller used to do a variety of jobs so that his parents could afford to send him to college. In 1947 Miller wrote his first play, All My Sons which won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Two of his most well-known plays are The Crucible and Death of a Salesman. The play I will be covering is called A view from the Bridge which was written in 1955. The idea behind it was influenced by a story Miller heard while he was working on the docks. A view from the Bridge is set in Brooklyn, following the life of the main character Eddie Carbone who was the husband to Beatrice and uncle to Catherine. When Beatrices cousins, Rodolfo and Marco, arrived in Brooklyn as illegal immigrants from Italy; this was when the trouble started. The other main character was Alfieri; he was a narrator, telling the story of Eddie Carbones life. The reason for the play having the name A view from the Bridge was because it contained the good and the bad. Eddie was jealous of Rodolfo and Catherine as he was trying to sabotage their ideas of marriage whilst Catherine and Rodolfo wanted to get married because they loved each other. Alfieri was standing on the bridge looking over, watching the argument flare out until its disastrous conclusion, ending in death. Miller started the play with Alfieri, the narrator. This was because of Alfieris importance. Theoretically, Alfieri was telling a story that had already happened to the audience. It was important to let the audience know that this story was a circular plot. Alfieri started the play with his first soliloquy. He was walking to his office when he saw a couple of long shore men. You wouldnt have known it but something amusing has just happened. See how uneasily they nod to me? Thats because I am a lawyer were only thought of in connection with disasters and theyd rather not get too close. Here Alfieri showed that he was observant because he realized what had happened even though nobody else did. He also told the audience who he was; he was a lawyer so this must mean that he was a very intelligent man. Additionally, he commented on how people treated him because of his job. You only go to lawyers if something bad has happened e. g. murder or family rows. The long shore men nodded to him uneasily which suggests that they distrusted him. A lawyer means the law Here Alfieri has introduced the first main theme in the play: Law. I am inclined to notice the ruins of in things, perhaps because I was born in Italy. Alfieri told the audience that he was observant. He noticed the bad things that maybe others cold not see. He said it was because he was born in Italy. From this we can assume that Italy was a very poor place which meant that Alfieri was used to seeing the bad things because of his life in Italy, which also means that life in Brooklyn was similar to yet better than Italy, so many more Italians would already be in Brooklyn or wanting to move to there. Frankie Yale himself was cut precisely in half by a machine gun on the corner of Union Street Alfieri was mentioning past events, this sentence also builds tension, it explained that Brooklyn was a very poor district where crime was not unusual. He then went on to say: Oh, there were many here who were justly shot by unjust men. This suggests that a lot of dishonest men were rightfully killed; however, the killers were dishonest themselves so the killers had no right to kill the other person. Justice is very important here. This sentence brings in the second main theme to the play: Justice. The whole play is going to be revolving around the idea of law and justice. This is the slum that faces the bay on the seaward side of Brooklyn Bridge. This is the gullet of New York swallowing the tonnage of the world Now we settle for half, and I like it better. I no longer keep a pistol in my filling cabinet. Here Alfieri was setting the scene, describing how horrible Brooklyn was, it was the lowest of the low, it was making New York look like a bad place, the use of personification is very effective because it referred to Brooklyn as the throat of New York where all the atrocious things in the world happened. Alfieri settled for half, as when he first arrived in Brooklyn, there was a lot of crime, but now there was only half of what it used to be, which was an improvement. And my practice is entirely unromantic people in this neighborhood lack elegance and glamour and yet every year there is still a case, and as the parties tell me what the trouble is, the flat air in my office suddenly washes in with the green scent of the sea, the dust in this air is blown away Alfieri had mentioned that usually his job was boring and mundane where nothing exciting happened. He had to deal with petty family complaints. However, he did get cases which were quite unlike his normal day to day complaints. As he mentioned this fact we could see that the play was going to involve one of those unusual complaints.

The Applications Of Content Marketing Marketing Essay

The Applications Of Content Marketing Marketing Essay Several companies use content marketing channels to have consumers like the content, comment on the content, and share the content. With its fairly new existence, companies are just now starting to take advantage of its application. However, many companies have been extremely successful with its use. With the expansion of social media, companies have had great success on websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to market their products content. A few companies that have had success with content marketing include Instagram, American Express, and Mint. The expansion of social media marketing is helping expand content marketing as well. Websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all provide a simple and affordable method of marketing content. Facebook, probably the most used channel, allows businesses to post information via wall posts, pictures, or videos on a businesss page for the world to see. This allows users to get the information about products and from there, they can share it with other users on Facebooks website. Next is Twitter. Twitter allows businesses to post a tweet about their products that will appear on their followers timeline. From there, their followers can retweet the message and allow other users to view it who follow them. Many businesses use Twitter to keep their customers informed about the products they offer and products they will soon offer. Instagram is a photo-sharing program and social media website that allows users to take a picture and share it with virtually the world. The service is free allowing many consumers as well as businesses to take advantage of its service. Businesses are now using Instagram for content marketing purposes. A successful lesson that can be learned from Instagram is that it has no direct target market. Anyone who takes a picture and uploads it is a great target for the company. This allows Instagram to have a diverse consumer base for different purposes. Next, this gives businesses an advantage because it allows consumers to see what businesses post about the content of their products. For content marketing purposes, Instagrams blog serves as a platform for users to tell their stories via images. Rather than directly promoting itself, Instagram gives users the power to share themselves via the Instagram product (Cohen, 2012). Next, American Express has expanded its content marketing strategies with the creation of OpenForum.com (Snow, 2011). Open Forum is a content marketing websites that allows a variety of businesses to post information, such as blogs, videos, articles, or podcasts, on their website to attract other businesses to it in order to increase business-to-business sales. Open Forum gives small businesses the tools they need to operate and information about how to operate their business. Some content is created by other publishers like Inc. Magazine or Mashable, and posted on Open Forums website, and other articles are created by Open Forum writers. According to Shane Snow, a writer for Mashable, Open Forum is a hybrid advertising/guest blogging/in-house editorial operation, and its fostering a community around the topic of running a business. Also according to Snow, some lessons from American Expresses content marketing is get trusted contributors to publish guest content on your properties, d evelop users around a topic and let your brand be the host of the community, and do not neglect original content that was created. Mint is considered a market leader in online personal finance. It has been very successful with its content marketing strategies. Mints blog created a blog entitled MintLife that was a core part of the companys operation. Mint dedicated significant resources to its blog, including a full time editorial staff and a slew of freelance contributors, unlike other companies that might rarely update their blogs or social media webpages. It used social news sites like Reddit and Digg, and Mint began to build their consumer base when their consumers began to see reliable and interesting content on the sites. The readers of the site began to become customers of Mint and started to promote Mints products on personal social media pages such as Facebook and Twitter. Kraft Foods has also been very successful in content marketing. Their focus is not on marketing their products; however, it is on bettering their current customers and subscribers lives and maintaining good customer relationship management. An example of their content marketing strategy is kraftrecipes.com that has been online since 1992. Kraftrecipes.com offers recipes to its subscribers. They also have expanded to using YouTube as well as mobile apps and social media sites. In order to measure their content marketing success, Kraft measures its traffic and engagement on different channels and sites (Gutman, Kraft Foods Dishes Out Its Recipe for Successful Content Marketing, 2012). According to Julie Fleischer, Director of Content Strategy Integration at Kraft Foods, The ROI on our Content Marketing work is among the highest of all of our marketing efforts. The last company of focus is Sears Holdings Company. Sears uses various ways of connecting people with their content. FitStudio is Searss online fitness community. On the site, they use different fitness experts to create content (Gutman, Sears Explains Its Success In Content Marketing, 2012). The expert contributors all reach various wellness communities and draw them to the FitStudio content, according to Julia Fitzgerald, Chief Digital Officer for Fitness, Sporting Goods Toys at Sears. They use several different channels, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, and Shop Your Way, to promote the FitStudio content as well as some paid methods of distribution as well. To measure their success, the look at FitStudios membership, engagement, page views, return visits, coupon redemption, or purchase (Gutman, Sears Explains Its Success In Content Marketing, 2012). Overall, they look at how engaged are their customers in determining their success.

Feminist Criticism Essay -- Feminism Female Essays

Feminist Criticism Contemporary feminist criticism focuses on various specified topics such as women’s biographical writings, lesbian and literature, and the role of film and the media in portraying feminine gender. It is no longer easily separated into categorical goals by nationalities or land boundaries. Instead, feminist criticism is now characterized according to whether the category of "woman" is the major focus, or whether gender identity is defined by sexual and other identities as well. These other differences include, but are not limited to, cultural identities as a woman, lesbian writings, sexual preference, and religious differences. Most feminist critics today stress the fact that while all women are female, they are much more than that. Each woman’s goals and problems make them who they are by creating a unique identity. The understanding of woman not as a single group has led modern feminist critics to advocate personal and autobiographical criticism. It has also fostered contemporary gender criticism. Gender critics explore different categories of gender and sexuality. Gender criticism does not only focus on women’s gender and sexuality, but also includes male gender issues. Gender criticism began solely as feminist criticism, and now the two are still overlapped. Elaine Tuttle Hansen has applied feminist criticism in her analysis of "The Miller’s Tale" in a segment of the chapter "Women as the Same" from the book Chaucer and the Fictions of Gender. While earlier critics have focused on the humorous side of what they consider an innocent prank, Hansen focuses on Alisoun’s escape from punishment. At the same time she recognizes that it was only by accident that Nicholas intervened to receive the punish... ...astly, I found reference to Alisoun being objectified as something only to look at in two separate, yet closely related examples. First, in lines 3247-3248 of her portrait, the Miller states that "She was ful more blisful on to see / Than is the newe pere-jonntte tree." Secondly, Absolon refers to Alisoun’s objectification by stating "to loke on hir him thoughte a merye lyf" (3344). Valued objects are often set away from "normal" areas to look upon for enjoyment purposes. And happiness is sometimes thought to be achieved through viewing a thing of beauty; this is how these men viewed Alisoun. In conclusion, it is clear to see through these examples how Chaucer used animal characteristics to objectify Alisoun. Furthermore, I feel that Hansen’s views on "The Miller’s Tale" were correct and justified. Overall, I feel that the views expressed by Hansen are enlightening.

Evidence Based Practice Essay

This question reminded me about the famous and probably one of the most important inventors in the world, Thomas Edison. When he was trying to create his filament for his light bulb, it took him more than a thousand tries to do so. Likewise in a hospital, all the procedures and treatments that nurses do while on the job has been practiced and experimented on so the patient can receive first-class quality care from the nurses. Evidence-based nursing is a process founded on the collection, interpretation, and integration of valid, important, and applicable research. An example of this can be when a new technique or procedure has been discovered to help cure new diseases. After extensive amounts of research, the technique will be experimented on. They will perform the new technique on patients to see if the patients feel better, and like the procedure done to them. Evidence-based practice will help you explore the process of making solid clinical decisions that you must make in the hospital. New problems will arise daily, and with evidence-based practice, you are able to solve those problems in a systematic way. I believe that to do evidence-based practice needs to be done with a group or a team. Efficiency and accuracy is needed when doing evidence-based practice because in the end, the patients are the ones that need to be satisfied with the care that they are receiving. An example of the evidence based practice is as a chemo nurse, patients admitted for chemotherapy are offered pre-treatment assessment and physical and emotional support. Also, we provide a low-stress setting that helps patients and families to receive fully absorb the information and educate themselves about their disease and its treatments. As an effect to evidence-based nursing, we can now be more confident about the procedures that we do on our patients, because they have been thoroughly checked over.

How does Shakespeare use the theme of love to create a comedy?

â€Å"Twelfth Night† is a romantic comedy with true love at its heart. The play does have occasional dark undertones but generally the genuine love and the misunderstanding make it a comic play. It was written originally for the Twelfth Night celebrations after Christmas in 1602. These celebrations were light hearted and a time for revelry. It was sometimes known as the â€Å"Feast of Fools† and normal behaviour and sensible acts were suspended at this time. Authority was turned up side down. In most universities, private houses and the law schools, a Lord of Misrule was elected. Usually a servant became Master of the Household for a short period of time. He organised dances, masques and make-believe activities. Everything was allowed; pranks, deception, etc., ruled this period between 25th December and 6th January. Afterwards, everything goes back to normal and the original hierarchy is once more obeyed.Love Poem Even though comedy is a large part of the play, love is most definitely the main theme. There are love triangles, love based on disguise and true love al involved in the lives of the characters. The play transforms one type of love for another, for example, selfish self-love is transformed to genuine love. This aspect shows that true love wins through in the end. Shakespeare uses all of the different types of love to create comedy towards the audience. For example, the self-love is so masochistic that the audience looks on with humour with the over-exaggeration. Unrequited love also makes quite a big romantic impact because the character is seen making a fool of themselves. Twelfth Night is a mixture of all emotions; an audience will laugh, cry and fume at the characters that Shakespeare creates. There are three characters at the heart of the play involved in a love triangle. Orsino is the first that we are introduced to. Shakespeare represents Orsino as a parody of the romantic lover, in love with the idea of love. He is comic at times because of his obsession and the exaggerated language he uses to talk about love: QUOTE: ACT 1, SCENE 1 â€Å"If music be the food of love, play on Give me the excess of it, that surfeiting The appetite may sicken and so die† This quotation shows how melodramatic Shakespeare makes Orsino. It is so exaggerated that the audience would find him comical as he is portrayed as thinking that no other experience is as good as his intense feeling for love. He is obsessed by Olivia and is comical because of his obsessive nature. He also frequently seems quite fickle in his feelings which adds to his comic nature: QUOTE: ACT 1, SCENE 1 â€Å"Enough; no more. ‘Tis not so sweet now as it was before† This quotation is an example of how Orsino changes his feelings in an instant. Later Orsino is talking to Viola/Cesario about men and women in love. He claims to be the model lover, talking about his love for Olivia: QUOTE: ACT 2, SCENE 4 â€Å"For such as I am, all true loves are Unstaid and skittish in all motions else† His lines are made particularly funny and he seems unperceptive because the audience is aware that Cesario is of course a woman and that despite what Orsino says about women having less capacity for love than men, Viola/Cesario in fact loves him a lot and much more constantly than he loves Olivia. This is a good example of dramatic irony. Shakespeare satirises Orsino's exaggerated obsessive form of love. The second character involved in the love triangle is Olivia. Orsino and Olivia are quite similar in a number of ways but their main similarity is in their characters. They both provide comedy in the play because of their obsessive love and their fickleness. Examples of this for Olivia are her obsessive love for her dead brother and Cesario and how she changes from seven years mourning to loving Cesario and then changing from Cesario to Sebastian. A quotation for her obsessive nature is: QUOTE: ACT 3, SCENE 1 â€Å"Have you not set mine honour at the stake And baited it all with th'unmuzzled thoughts That tyrannous heart can think† Here, Olivia is openly expressing her love for Cesario which ends up being comical because it is unrequited. She pours her heart out which adds to the nature of the scene. Olivia criticises Orsino's stereotypical view of love because it doesn't sound real to her. Her actions towards love are actually much the same but she does not realise this, making her hypocritical and therefore criticising her own way of thinking. Also, she claims that she will never love again but that all changes when Cesario comes into the picture. Shakespeare creates her character to be an unrealistic and vain, top-class person which shows through in her language. Orsino praises her for her looks, not for her as a person and this once more accentuates their similarities and comic personal lives. This act depicts how shallow Orsino is. One of the most comical parts of the play to do with Olivia is when she falls in love with Cesario, or who the audience knows is Cesario. This is highly amusing for the audience as they know the truth and they watch Olivia make a fool of herself. Shakespeare uses love from Olivia to Viola to create a high point of comedy throughout the play. He uses over-exaggerated language once more to really highlight the shallow feelings of Olivia: QUOTE: ACT 1, SCENE 5 â€Å"Let him send no more Unless (perchance) you come to me again To tell me now he takes it† This quotation is Olivia talking seductively to Cesario, once more openly expressing her feelings for â€Å"him†. Again, comical to the audience, for seeing a woman flirt with another was a very amusing but unheard of thing at the time when this play was performed. When Sebastian appears on stage a comical effect takes place because we can imagine the blank looks on the characters' faces as an identical twin becomes part of the plot. Sebastian becomes a love interest to the fickle Olivia, once more creating comedy because of her changeability. By making Olivia so fickle and over-exaggerated Shakespeare creates a large amount of comedy based around her and the people she is involved with. The third and final part of the love triangle is Viola. She disguises herself as a man and serves Orsino which is comic first-off because of how she changes herself. The audience sees the change and therefore can compare the different reactions and feelings between the characters of Viola and Cesario. The audience would be used to this kind of dramatic behaviour, as a long tradition of plays at this time had these kind of comic complications. They would find it excessively funny seeing a beautiful woman able to disguise herself as a man yet no other characters able to notice. This is dramatic irony for the audience is let in on the secret but still can watch everyone not in the know create a jolly and comic atmosphere. Viola is sometimes witty and is involved in a range of comic situations most of them involved with the love complications in the play. The funniest single scene involving Viola has to be her comic duel with Sir Andrew which is set up by Sir Toby because both men are rivals for Olivia though of course neither does actually love her. There are several comic moments involving Viola where she gets herself caught up in situations that accentuate the comic nature of the play. Ironically Orsino fails to realise that his wonderful new servant is actually a woman despite the hinting conversations they have: QUOTE: ACT 1, SCENE 4 â€Å"Thy small pipe is as the maiden's organ† Here Orsino is speaking and commenting on Viola's unnatural high, shrill female voice yet he still does not catch on that she is actually a woman. This also has a slightly bawdy tone to it which was very popular at that time and would definitely have made the audience laugh. At the end of the scene the audience realises the romantic comedy is underway as Viola reveals her true feelings for Orsino: QUOTE: ACT X, SCENE X â€Å"I'll so my best to woo your lady (Aside) Yet a barful strife Whoe'er I woo myself would be his wife† The language here is romantic and wistful for Viola has to assist someone else, who she perceives not worthy of his love, to love Orsino although underneath she has true romantic feelings for him. Then Orsino sends Cesario to woo Olivia who falls in love with Viola! This is ironic and what starts off the love triangle. Shakespeare writes a speech for Viola to say to Olivia which is romantic, lyrical and paints vivid romantic pictures. It is also quite comical for the audience as they realise Olivia is in love with Viola. Viola can actually be quite witty and we can see this in her conversation with Maria: QUOTE: ACT 1, SCENE 5 â€Å"Some mollification for your giant Sweet lady† Viola is being rude and sarcastic to Maria referring to her as a â€Å"giant†, therefore commenting on her lack of height. This is a small indication of what the real Viola is like underneath her male costume. By the end of the Act, Viola realises that Olivia has fallen in love with her, creating yet more amusement among the audience. Comedy is also involved when Orsino fails to realise Viola's feelings despite some heavy hints: QUOTE: ACT 2, SCENE 4 â€Å"Of your completion†¦..About your years, my Lord† These are just two of the lines or hints that Viola says when she is in Orsino's company. Viola says a long speech about the sincerity of her love. Shakespeare really goes all-out on the imagery in this section which reflects how Viola is feeling. It is a powerful insight into her life and feelings which is then cast into a shadow by Orsino's weak and misunderstood response. QUOTE: ACT 2, SCENE 4 â€Å"But died thy sister of his love, my boy?† This is comic because even though Viola is her heart out for him, he is too bound up in his love affairs to notice. The duel is a very comic moment because Viola and Sir Andrew are both terrified of each other thanks to of the crafty ways of Sir Toby. He also urges them both on to the fight. Viola's aside line would make the audience laugh: QUOTE: ACT 3, SCENE 4 â€Å"Pray God defend me! A little thing would make me tell them how much I love of a man† This would be very comical for the audience for it reveals Viola's fright and nervousness towards the fight. Also she is supposed to be a man but everyone thinks that her slightly feeble attitude towards the fight is cowardly, and they would probably also doubt her masculinity therefore resulting it into and ironic and comic situation. In the final scene there is a mounting sense of comic confusion, particularly when Olivia thinks she has married Viola then Sebastian himself enters. You could see what confusion this would amount to on stage – everyone looking from Viola to Sebastian and back again. Shakespeare creates a huge amount of confusion with Viola because of her mistaken identity. Comically, everything turns out more or less well for her and Shakespeare successfully uses love to create comedy. Shakespeare creates characters primarily for comic effect in this play and each of them are in some way involved in the theme of love. Sir Andrew is one of these. He is a figure of fun, but can also be seen as a sad person. The audience feels sympathy for him while laughing at his antics. He has been tricked by Sir Toby into believing he is in love with Olivia, which shows how easily he can be manipulated. Therefore he is constructed as a comic character. Sir Toby tells him to do stupid things like dance wildly, his appearance is comical to the audience (long, lanky figure, rather dim expression) and most comical of all he repeats Sir Toby's words but misunderstands them: QUOTE: ACT 1, SCENE 3 â€Å"Good Mistress Accost I desire better acquaintance† He gets confused with what people say and this puts a very comical and stupid air about his character. Shakespeare always portrays him as foolish. But he also has speeches which make you feel slightly sorry for him: QUOTE: ACT 2, SCENE 5 â€Å"I knew t'was I for many do call me fool† Even Sir Andrew is aware that people call him a fool which is a funny, yet heartfelt feeling put across by Shakespeare. Another poignant yet comic line is: QUOTE: ACT 2, SCENE 3 â€Å"I was adored once too† A famous line for you can tell his sorrow at being unloved yet you can laugh at his pathetic view on love. The main comic scene for Sir Andrew is the duel in Act 3, Scene 4. Shakespeare uses Sir Andrew for a key element of plot development in Act 4after fighting. Sir Andrew is terrified at the prospect of fighting someone and proceeds to do cowardly actions and act pathetically. This would seem hilarious to the audience because of how Shakespeare portrays Sir Andrew leading up to the fight and during it. Sir Andrew is left unhappy and alone at the end for everyone is married and have a happy ending. He does not but still his false love and stupidity casts him to be an important part of the play. Malvolio is another character who Shakespeare uses to create comedy in relation to love. He is a Puritan, satirised by Shakespeare, and filled to the brim with self love. Malvolio is not a sincere Puritan because of the letter plot in the box tree scene. This cleverly arranged plot reveals what a hypocrite Malvolio is about lusting after Olivia, as he frowned upon Sir Toby and Maria before, but when it relates to him he doesn't care. This scene is the first comic element of Malvolio; the letter tricks him into smiling inappropriately and wearing awful clothes to impress Olivia, obviously all of this failing dismally in winning her affections, dramatically increasing the comedy of Malvolios character. In Act 3, Scene 4, the trick is revealed and Malvolio appears very ridiculous as he realises what a fool he has been. Sir Toby is very rude and cruel to him which makes him realise how unhappy his life is and how much disrespect people have for him. These elements do put a damper on the comic play but Malvolio does contribute with his comedy and love based antics. Although Shakespeare uses the theme of love primarily to create the comedy, the play also has much darker undertones. Feste is an ironic commentator on human nature and on the way in which people behave when they are in love. He has a very different perspective on love to the aristocratic figures in the play. Shakespeare ends the comedy with an epilogue from Feste, telling some very bitter thoughts about human nature, love and life. It ends with: QUOTE: ACT 5 SCENE 1 â€Å"But that's all one, our play is done And we'll strive to please you every day This is an acceptance of the sad conditions of life. A very unexpected end to a comedy. Feste is philosophical in all of his bitter songs and they all have poignant lines in them: QUOTE: ACT 2 SCENE 3 â€Å"Youth's a stuff will not endure This is a saying that youth, love and beauty will not last forever. Another sad line is: QUOTE: ACT 2 SCENE 4 â€Å"Sad true lover, never find my grave This tells us about how people hide away and die for love. Feste provides us with comedy about love but his main role in this play is to make the audience come back to their senses and realise the reality of life. Overall, this play has many ways to show how love and comedy combine to make a story of passion and heartbreak, love and unhappiness. Every character I have analysed here contributes towards the intense tone of the play, giving comedy and love to the audience. Yes, there are a few who reveal the darker undertones but these characters are essential in making the play as provoking, passionate and realistic that it is. QUOTE: ACT 5 SCENE 4 â€Å"A great while ago the world begun With hey, ho the wind and the rain But that's all one, our play is done, And we'll strive to please you every day†

Find MBA Case Studies From Top Business Schools

Find MBA Case Studies From Top Business Schools Many business schools use the case method to teach MBA students how to analyze business problems and develop solutions from a leadership perspective. The case method involves presenting students with case studies, also known as cases, that document a  real-life business situation or imagined business scenario. Cases typically present a problem, issue, or challenge that must be addressed or solved for a business to prosper. Candle Making Through the Centuries

Unlike animal fats, bees burns without emitting smoke. It also releases a sweet scent compared to the bad smell released by burning tallow. Honey candles are widely used for religious activities and celebrations, but due to their high price, only priests and upper classes can buy it. Since the cost of beeswax candles from the Middle Ages to the thirteenth century, butter candle was still the most commonly used light source in Europe. The evidence of modern candle appeared in Rome in the 1st century. These candles are made from a small core and thick handmade tallow. In the early Middle Ages the candle was made by pouring and then impregnated, but this method did not change very much during the next few centuries. Wax is also used, but the candle is almost exclusively used for etiquette and it is too expensive for general lighting. In the nineteenth century, Michel Chevruel made progress in chemistry, making it possible to produce higher quality candle beef tallow derivative stearin. Chemists use soap manufacturing process to separate fat from liquid oleic acid in animal oil. In 1830, Carl Reichenbach isolated a stable crystalline material that is stable and burnable from coal. He named it paraffin wax. After 1860, paraffin was distilled from petroleum and produced in large quantity, high quality candle became cheap. The discovery of the 19th century improved the candle manufacturing technology. I found stearin and paraffin. They have no soot or strong smell, so they are the main material for candle making. They are easier and cheaper than beeswax. In 1834, Joseph Morgan invented a manual machine for manufacturing industrial scale molded candles. Think about, over a hundred years ago, life depended completely on the availability of daylight. Working under the candles' light is inconvenient, expensive and ineffective. This natural restriction gives people the right to finish their work tomorrow without having to blame themselves for the holidays. I know? The word candle comes from the Latin incaendium. This means wildfire, heat, torch. The oldest beeswax candle is the Oberflacht candle in the Alamannic cemetery in Seitingen-Oberflacht, Krest-Ruhrgen, Germany. They currently live in the WÃ ¼rttemberg State Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Due to the arrival and progress of the industrial revolution, the next major advance in lighting (gas lights and lights) has occurred for almost a century. The main benefits of natural gas (electric barrier) include the infrastructure and dual use capabilities that exist when lights emerge (natural gas can also be used for cooking). We discuss them one by one

The bicycle Thieves Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The bicycle Thieves - Essay Example It should be clarified that the movement began not to highlight the economic decline that followed World War II but because of it. The film-making industry suffered in particular – by the conversion of studios in to military and refugee camps, the lack of equipment and the unreliability of the electrical supply. This lead to the production of films shot strictly on location, capturing the war-ravaged sights of post-war Italy – and focusing on a more honest portrayal of real lives and real people. Neo-realist filmmakers believed that cinema had moral repercussions and should thus be manipulated carefully to draw attention towards some truths. ‘The Bicycle Thieves’, in keeping with traditional neo-realist films casts non-professional actors in lead roles. Indeed, the protagonist of the movie, Antonio Ricci, was played by Lamberto Maggiorani, a worker himself. The character Antonia Ricci is shown to have been unemployed for almost two years at the start of the film before he is offered a job – the sole requirement of which is the possession of a bicycle. Despite knowing that he does not own one, Ricci takes up the job of putting up movies posters around town. His wife, Maria, pawns linen bed-sheets that were a part of her dowry in exchange for money to buy a bicycle. On their way home, his wife stops at an old building, claiming to meet someone. However, Antonio discovers that Maria is actually there to give money to a clairvoyant who predicted that he would get a job soon. Ricci mocks her and tells her off for being superstitious. The next day, as Antonio sets out for work, a young man steals his bicycle while his back is turned and takes off with it. Antonio pursues him frenetically until he loses track of him. He goes to the police to enlist their help but discovers that there is not much they can do. In despair, Antonio takes to walking the streets and scouting marketplaces with his son, Bruno, and his friends in search of his bicycle. Their search leads them to many places and to falsely accusing a man of possessing the stolen bicycle. However, after vainly attempting to find it, they give up. At this point, Antonio decides to treat his son to dinner at a restaurant. The scene that follows is pivotal to the theme of the movie. While Antonio and Bruno are enjoying their meal, Bruno keeps turning around to look at another seemingly wealthier family dining at a table nearby. He exchanges glances with a boy his own age seated at this table. Antonio notices this, and exclaims with frustration ‘To eat like that, you’d have to earn at least a million a month.’ Antonio and Bruno, in the throes of their despair, go to see the clairvoyant that Antonio had mocked earlier on. It is interesting to note that when faced with the prospect of poverty, Ricci turns to the same superstitions he derided his wife for believing in while when at the start of the film, shortly after the acquisition of his bi cycle and a job, he believes them to be associated with irrationality and thus baseless. The clairvoyant gives Ricci vague and unhelpful advice, telling him that he would either find his bicycle today o not at all. Dismayed, Bruno and Antonio leave the building. Soon after, however, they spot the thief who had stolen his bicycle. They chase him down, but are surrounded by hostile neighbors. Bruno discreetly slips away to find a policeman while Antonio accuses the thief of having

The Ethical Standards of Nike Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

The Ethical Standards of Nike - Essay Example Nike has changed its course of action in recent years from one of sheer denial and arguments to one of policy and change. The fact that the company responded only to global media pressure and the fact that standards only changed in Indonesia because of workers strikes and consumer pressure leave something to be desired about the ethical standards of Nike. However, it is important to recognize that Nike did change, though the implementation of the 1997 policies, almost ten years later, is not fully in effect. Â  Nike should be held ethically responsible for the working conditions in foreign factories of subcontractors. In a business decision, regardless of the international boundaries, it is important to follow a certain level of ethical standards. While it is impossible to judge if Nike absolutely knew of the sub-standard conditions, it is logical to assume that Nike could not have ignored the possibility, regardless of the information from Mr. Young, who said that the conditions were adequate in the factories. Yet, in countries where minimum age and working condition laws are not contusive to an appropriate and healthy lifestyle, Nike, by simple association, should maintain a level of dignity for their products. However, the legalities of the situation become more intricate for Nike, being an American based business, subcontracts to (mainly) Asian factories.

Chinese philosophy Essay Example for Free

Chinese philosophy Essay The pair lived in a time of immense social disorder and religious skepticism. They developed the notion of the Dao (way, or path) as the origin of all creation and the force (unknowable in its essence but observable in its manifestations) that lies behind the functions and changes of the natural world. Daoism Chinese religion â€Å"mirrors the social landscape of its adherents. There are as many meanings as there are vantage points.† This can be very confusing to outsiders†¦ Daoism and Confucianism existed together. At various points in one life, you might follow either. (There are many who only practice one) Due to the social disorder of the time, the question was: what is the basis of a stable, unified, and enduring social order? Their answer was the Dao. Nature, after all, was much more stable than anything humans can create. Healthy human life could flourish only in accordance with Dao. Nature, simplicity, a free-and-easy approach to life. Daoism  To be skillful and creative, they had to have inner spiritual concentration and put aside concern with externals, such as monetary rewards, fame, and praise. Artisans were typically very good at this idea. When stressed, or seeking an escape, the Daoist might retire to the countryside, or mountains and write a poem or paint a picture. This was an attempt to capture the simplicity of nature in their own lives. Daoism In Chinese society, Daoism created the Chinese love of nature It also inspired an intense affirmation of life: physical life: health, well-being, vitality, longevity, and even immortality. Some Chinese sought the fountain of youth, or herbs and plants that would extend life. This lead to the wealth of knowledge in Chinese medicine. Daoism There were kind of gods†¦ The gods and Jade Emperor could be seen as the supreme rulers. Obeying the rulers on earth would prepare you to follow him later on. The demons and ghosts of hell acted like and were treated like the bullies, outlaws, and strangers in the real world. All things were the manifestation of the one Dao.

Culture in Creative Solution is same as the Google, but exactly not like that. Because the culture in Creative Solution also is very motivate, interesting and attractive. They using small methods to attract innovative people and good customers. LO1. 2 The Relationship between Organization Culture and Structure (http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/organizational-culture.html, 2012) (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-relationship-between-organizational-structure-and-organizational-culture.htm, 2012) The Organization Culture in Organization is a major role. Organizational structure and organizational culture have a dependent relationship with one another. In the business world, management structure determines the behaviors, attitudes, dispositions, and ethics that create the work culture. If a companys organizational structure is strictly hierarchical, with decisions making power centralized at the top, the companys culture will likely reflect a lack of freedom and autonomy at the lower levels. If the companys management structure is decentralized, with shared power and authority at all levels, the culture is likely to be more independent, personalized and accountable. Its really easy to work in that structure. The way company allocates power and authority determines how employees behave. These choices manifest in a companys organizational structure and organizational culture. Most companies use a hierarchical structure that looks like a pyramid. The chief executive or president sits at the very top of pyramid. Other officers directly report to him. In the Google, there organizational structure and organizational culture also connected to one another. There hire people who smart and determined, and they favor ability over experience. Although Googlers share common goals and visions for the company, they hail from all walks of life and speak dozens of language, reflecting the global audience that they serve. And they not at work, Googlers pursue interests ranging from cycling to beekeeping, from Frisbee to foxtrot. They strive to maintain the open culture often associated with startups, in which everyone is a hands-on contributor and feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. In their weekly all-hands meetings not to mention over e-mail or in the cafà ©_ Googlers ask questions directly to Larry, Serge and other execs about any number of companys issues. Their officers and cafes are designed to encourage interaction between Googlers within and across teams, and speak conversations about works as well as play. The organizationa l structure is very different because they are made up of many shareholders that have a say in what the company does and turns into. In Creative Solutions, their culture and structure attached to each other. The culture in Creative Solutions is very interesting and very motivate, and they using a functional organizational structure. Its best suited as a producer of standardized goods and services at large volume and low cost. LO2.2 Organizational Theory (http://management.blurtit.com/q7346416.html, 2012) Organizational theory and management theory is used in many aspects of a working business. Many people strive to adhere to the theory to help them become better at their jobs or more successful in life, although this may lead to them having to sacrifice some of their personal principles in order to succeed. One example of following organizational theory in the financial sector would be an employee or manager who wants to know how to achieve goals by having a set structure to follow. In addition, someone in a Human Resources sector will have to make decisions throughout their working day that will undoubtedly change the structure and practice of a working day for all other employees in the company. If an individual gets so wrapped up in trying to fit the mould of what they interpret their role should be in terms of organizational theory, they may start to neglect other areas of business. In the same way, management theory may also underpin the personal values of some individuals. For instance, they may disagree with a particular rule or regulation that has been introduced by the company, however in order to carry out their job as a manager effectively and professionally, they need to move away from their principles and execute the job. It is difficult to try to execute both management and organizational theories as a psychological contract between the employer and employee still needs to be maintained. This will need to consider how fairly the company is treating the employee and how fairly the employee is treating the company, i.e. are they actually putting 100 percent effort into their work? Any changes to the organization or management in a company, is undoubtedly going to have an effect on all of this. LO2.3 Different Approaches to Management used by Google and Creative Solutions. Google Human behavior approach. This is based on psychology and social psychology. It means management should understand about the human behavior. Management should increasing productivity through motivation and good human relations. In Google they creating friendly, peaceful and relaxed environment for their employees. In Google, their employees highly motivated to their duty well. They maintain a simple and open communication structure. Google has a flat structure that uses cross hierarchical, cross functional teams and they good at decision making. Relationship approach. This means keeping a good cultural relationship. Relationships exist among the external as well as internal environment of the organization. Cooperation among group members is necessary for the achievement of organization objectives. For effective management, efforts should be made for establishing harmony between goals of the organization and the various groups therein. In Google they maintaining with the Laissez- Faire style. This will help to keep to good, strong relationship between employees and the leaders in the Google. Selecting employees approach. In Google, they selected their employees in a special way. They get billions of application in a year. So they are maintaining a good employees selecting system. They are selecting people with good skilled, good personality and with high academic achievements because its easy work with them and its saving Googles money. Creative Solutions Culture approach Creative solutions create a good, friendly and attractive environment for their employees that can work easily. Interpersonal behavior. Creative Solution always focusing on their employees interpersonal behavior. So that they always selecting, training their employees to make them as good, skill full employees. Section 2 LO2.1 Different Leadership Styles There are different leadership styles in an organization they used to have a successful growth. There are three leadership styles in management, Autocratic Leadership Style Democratic Leadership Style Laissez-Faire Leadership Style In Google they are using Laissez-Faire Leadership Style. The French fraise means leave it be. It describes a leader leave his her colleagues to get on with their works. These types of leadership works for teams in which the individuals are very experienced and skilled self-starters. The Company hired smart engineers, promoted most brilliant into leadership positions and then pretty much left them alone. The reason to do that, they were smart and if they have any problem they figure it out or ask questions if they needed help. Google took time and effort to find out the leadership qualities that are most important in their culture. And in the Creative Solutions, they using the same leadership style in their culture. The effectiveness of this Laissez-Faire Leadership style is final responsibility still lies with the leader. The Laissez Faire leader lets her followers have free reign over the approach, the decision making and basically all aspects in getting the job done. In Creative Solutions they are using democratic leadership style in their structure. Democratic Leadership style, leader will take the final decision, and he/she invites other team members to contribute the decisions-making process. By involving this increase the job satisfaction and also develop the peoples skills, and so motivated to work hard. This style takes more time to take things happen, but the end result is better. LO3.1 -Faced the Technological Breakdown Using Different Leadership Styles Last week theres a huge technological breakdown, and its effect to the whole industry. Because of that most companies in the industry has fallen down in their operations. This technological breakdown not only effect to the industry, its effect to the share market also. And also it effect to the industry in worldwide. In this situation Google is different leadership styles to face this technological breakdown. And Creative Solutions also using different leadership styles to face this technological breakdown. Normally Google is using Laissez-Faire Leadership style in their organization and Creative Solution using Democratic Leadership style in their organization. But in this case its better if they use all three leadership styles, because good leaders use all this three leadership styles to get the best result in their activity. By using all three leadership styles in this case, we can avoid this technological breakdown. In autocratic leadership style leaders tell their employees to what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice from their followers, its better use it is when you have all the information to solve the problem, you are on short time and your employees well motivated. And this is using for only rare occasions. In democratic leadership style, involves leader including one or more employees in the decision making process, it allows them to become part of the team and allows you to make better process. And the leader maintains the final decision. By using all this three types of leadership styles its easy to identify the problem and faced it well, and also its good for the employees motivation. Section 3 LO3.2- Motivational Theory (http://www.managementstudyguide.com/maslows-hierarchy-needs-theory.htm, 2012) Motivation is a word divided from Latin word movere, meaning to move. Motivation is a general term applying to the entire class of drives, desires, needs, wishes, and similar forces. Motivation can be either positive or negative. Its a process that accounts for an individuals intensity, direction and persistence of effort toward attaining an organizational goal. Diagram 01. There are Three Major Motivational Theories in management. Maslows Hierarchy Theory of Needs Aldefers ERG Theory Herzbergs Motivation-Hygiene Theory Maslows Hierarchy Theory based on the assumption that there is a hierarchy of five needs within each individual. This Maslows Hierarchy Theory most often display like a pyramid. The lower level in the pyramid, are made for the most basic needs and the complex needs are in the top of the pyramid. Each one of these needs significantly satisfied its drives and forced to the next level. Applying this Maslows Hierarchy Theory to the Creative Solutions, we can identify what are the higher-order needs and what are the lower-level needs and then can find a way to satisfy them. In Aldefers ERG theory, he recatogorized Maslows Hierarchy Theory of Needs into three simple categorized. They are, Existence Needs Relatedness needs Growth Needs Diagram 02 Existence Relatedness Growth Applying this into the Creative Solutions we can identify the most concrete needs and satisfy them. Existence needs are the most concrete needs and after satisfying them we can think about the next level and its automatically jump into the next level. In Herzbergs Motivation-Hygiene Theory, there are two kind of factors affect on motivation and they are Hygiene factors and motivators. Hygiene factors determine dissatisfaction and motivators determine satisfaction. Herzbergs theory confirms that only satisfaction can make a good productivity. Applying this to the Creative Solutions they avoid unpleasantness at work and create job satisfaction in the working environment. So its help to made a good service to the customer LO3.3 Motivational Theory for Managers (http://www.accel-team.com/motivation/, 2012) As a motivational theory Herzbergs Motivation-Hygiene Theory is suitable for the managers in Creative Solution. Applying this motivational theory to the Creative Solutions, it helps to motivate managers and get the best result from them. There are two factors in Herzberg theory, they are Hygiene Factors Motivational Factors Hygiene factor are those are essential in a work place. If its not entered to the work place, then they lead to the dissatisfaction. These factors describe the job environment/scenario. Hygiene factors include, Pay. Companies Policies and Administrative Policies. Fringe Benefits. Physical Working Conditions. Status. Interpersonal Relations. Job Security. And motivational factors are motivating the employees to the superior performance. Motivational factors are called satisfiers. Motivational factors include, Recognition. Sense of Achievement. Growth and Promotional Activities.. Responsibility. Meaningfulness of the Work. The Two-Factor theory implies that the managers must stress upon guaranteeing the adequacy of the hygiene factors to avoid employee dissatisfaction. Also, the managers must make sure that the work is stimulating and rewarding so that the employees are motivated to work and give their best to the organization. The job must utilize the employees skills and give a good compete to the competitors. Focusing on the motivational factors can improve work-quality. Task 02 HR Manager Presentation in Google Conclusion The purpose of this report understands the organization behavior in the world. Pocahontas Essay -- History Native Americans

Pocahontas Introduction [1] Disney’s Pocahontas has understandably received a lot of flak about the historically inaccurate story that is told about the legendary Pocahontas and Captain John Smith. There is a good reason for that. The movie does little that can be construed as historically accurate, yet Disney claims that was never their intent. Disney, in their previous movies, has been attacked for being racist and unsympathetic to racial minorities. Their answer was a movie whose sole purpose, as stated by Disney, was to promote racial tolerance. The question is, then can a movie promote racial tolerance when the issue is built on false history, history that if told accurately would depict the exact opposite? [2] First, I feel that it is important to establish exactly what Disney’s intentions were in making the film. Secondly, I intend to show that Disney provided enough historical information that it is questionable whether or not one can assume that they were trying to teach history, history that is specifically aimed at children. Lastly, I will show that the real story of Pocahontas was not about racial tolerance, that it was not about understanding one’s culture, but it was in fact about trying to change one’s culture. Disney’s Intention [3] From the movie’s start Disney has been preaching innocence about trying to accurately depict history. Disney, in their press kit, expressed that, â€Å"Pocahontas is a story that appealed to us because it was basically a story about people getting along together†¦ which is particularly applicable to lots of places in the world today† (Pocahontas 33). In addition, Thomas Schmucher, who is the senior vice president of Disney feature animation, says, â€Å"It is a... ... 11 June 1995: 46. Maturity: Being Considerate :: Psychology Essays

Maturity: Being Considerate According to Webster's dictionary, maturity is due care or consideration. There are many different kinds of maturity depending on what a person places their emphasis on. One type of maturity, intellectual, is caring about your personal well being. The level of one's intellectual maturity shows their ability to handle certain tasks set before them. A person who is considerate of others shows signs of social maturity. The ability to interact with others is necessary in order to function as part of this society. Different types of maturity can be independent of each other; you can have a high level of intellectual maturity and a low level of social maturity or vise versa. As you will see from e-mails of former students, levels vary greatly from one person to the next. Maturity is not only how you interact with others, but also how you manage your own responsibilities and affairs. An intellectually mature person demonstrates certain characteristics. The ability to follow instructions shows that you are willing to do things correctly in order to learn from the experience. To illustrate this point, say a student had difficulties using a particular program for an assignment. Even though this person disliked using the program that was required for the assignment, he understood the importance of doing his work correctly and he finished it despite the inconvenience. An example of a student who follows directions poorly is that of the student who just pasted in random responses for his log entry instead of doing the assignment as instructed. Another quality that a person must possess is open-mindedness. Being willing to explore new ideas and ways of doing things enriches a person's life. A Christian who is willing to learn the theory of evolution in order to broaden his mind set and to secure his beliefs is a good example of this characteristic. However, one student in particular believes that he does not need to use the library as a source in research because he believes that his information is better and more relative to his subject, which demonstrates his close mindedness because he is not willing to use other sources for information. A person's ability to understand their weaknesses and utilizing their abilities to the maximum shows their intellectual maturity. Take Timothy for example, he cannot grasp the concept of mathematics, so instead of failing the course, he takes the initiative to hire a tutor in order to assure that he will pass the class.

New York Stock Exchange

New York Stock Exchange Regulation is strictly dedicated to strengthening market integrity and investor protection. All, the directors in the NYSE Regulation's board of directors is comprised of a majority of directors unaffiliated with any other NYSE board. As a result, NYSE Regulation is independent in its decision-making. The organization consists of three  divisions: Market Surveillance, Enforcement, and Listed Company Compliance.  Ã‚  NYSE Regulation protects investors by enforcing marketplace rules and federal securities laws. NYSE Regulation also ensures that companies listed on the NYSE and on NYSE Arca meet our financial and corporate-governance listing standards. The NYSE Regulation Board has the following committees: (1) the Human Resources and Compensation Committee;   (2) the Nominating and Governance Committee; and (3) the Committee for Review. The Human Resources and Compensation Committee is appointed by the Board and is charged with duties relating to NYSE Regulation’s human resources policies and procedures, employee benefit plans, compensation and disclosure. The NYSE Regulation Board of Directors is  comprised of three  NYSE Euronext  directors, six  otherwise unaffiliated with NYSE Euronext, and  the NYSE Regulation Chief Executive Officer. The CEO  of NYSE Regulation has primary responsibility for the regulatory oversight of the U.S. market  subsidiaries within NYSE Euronext and reports solely to the NYSE Regulation board of directors.  The Regulation Board oversees all compensation decisions for Regulation employees and the nomination of directors to the Board of Regulation.   When it comes to disciplinary actions, the decisions of NYSE Regulation and its Board of Directors are final, although subject to appeal to the SEC. NYSE Regulation  performs regulatory responsibilities for the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE Arca.   It is comprised of  a  Market Surveillance division that monitors trading activities and investigates  trading abuses  by member organizations on the Floor and  away from the Exchange, an  Enforcement division  that investigates and prosecutes related  disciplinary actions, and a  Listed Company Compliance division that ensures that companies listed on NYSE and on NYSE Arca meet their financial and corporate governance listing standards. Market Surveillance is the division responsible for monitoring trading activities on the Floor and trading â€Å"upstairs† by member firms, both on a real-time basis and after the fact. Enforcement cases include: books and records deficiencies, supervisory violations, misconduct on the trading floor, insider trading, market manipulation, and other abusive trading practices. The trading of securities in the U.S. is subject to vigorous regulation. The principal laws governing trading  are the  Securities Act of 1933 (â€Å"the 1933 Act†) and the  Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (â€Å"1934 Act†). NYSE rules apply to  NYSE member organizations, as well as past and present  representatives, and are designed to protect investors and foster fair dealings with customers. Federal Reserve Board Rules   apply to the entire banking sector for the regulation of borrowing and lending requirements.   Individual states in the U.S. have their own state securities laws.   Any offering of securities in the U.S. must be made in accordance with state as well as federal regulations. Whether Dick Grasso's compensation was â€Å"reasonable† is a matter of opinion. There are some former directors who still declare adamantly that he deserved all he was paid. Most of the world probably thinks differently. He got a payout of $139.5 million in retirement compensation and other benefits. According to insiders Grassos ran the NYSE like a private fiefdom. Mr. Grasso's friends and allies on the board contributed a lot to the NYSE but the same lot became a symbol of corporate governance gone bad when it was revealed that those same people doled out his big pay package. The SEC has found that during Mr. Grasso's reign, specialists repeatedly traded for their own benefit in the place of customers who were ready to trade at the same price. This spurt of questionable trading may have cost investors at least $155 million, according to the SEC staff. That said, it would be a mistake to understate Mr. Grasso's contributions to the NYSE. His imperious style helped hold together the exchange's many, often-bickering, constituencies. Thanks to his spending on additional technology, the NYSE easily handled the high volume and volatility of the recent bull and bear markets, no small task. But in the end it is pertinent to mention that NYSE was a non-profit organization and under no circumstance the Chairman can be considered as a CEO of a big multi national. His primary duty was to protect the national interest and was entitled to get the best compansation comparable to a higher government official and not the huge retirement package that he got. Christianity in the Land of Santhals

There is considerable difference of opinion among Christians over the story of Creation. From the Catholic perspective God is ever present in some aspect. There are significant themes in the Bible, Moral Therapeutic Deism and â€Å"NOAH† that explicitly express distinct views of creation. The central idea in all three expressions is that God is in existence and created the world. However, the creation stories differ significantly regarding the purpose and reason of the world, more specifically human beings. The story of creation differs greatly throughout the Bible. The amount of altering views in the book of Genesis alone is astounding. Genesis is the study of beginning; the record of all creation along with sin. It is â€Å"mythic† in the way that it tries to make sense of the world. Genesis contains two creation stories. In chapter one and the beginning of chapter two, the first story expresses the stages of creation in six days, with each day expanding from the day before, until creation achieves its peak when God makes human beings in His image. In Genesis I, the world begins â€Å"in the beginning† of everything. From a void, God creates everything out of nothing. â€Å"1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.† (Genesis 1:1-2) God created light and darkness on day one, the next day He created the atmosphere and divided it from the oceans, on day three God created land, water and vegetation, the next day He created the sun, moon and stars, on day five God created creatures to fill the sky and water, on day six He created creatures to fill the land, and on the last day of creation God rested from all His work. The second story of creation centers around the creation of a human being. God took dirt and breathed life to create the world and humanity. In this Genesis story, creation was more experimental. This can be seen through His creation of Adam and eventually Eve. God seems to be enthusiastic about the world. Similar to Genesis I, God created humanity out of His love and kindness. â€Å"And God saw that it was good.† (Genesis 1:4) He plants a garden and creates animals to entertain Adam and Eve demonstrating how deeply He cares for them and all future humanity. Furthermore, when God created man and woman in His own image, the Bible says, â€Å"And God saw everything that He made, and behold, it was very good.† (Genesis 1:31) God was fulfilled with His creation and looking at it gave Him a kind of bliss. The Genesis creation accounts set up a specific problem by stressing the goodness of everything that God has made and continuously deny that the world is broken from the start by a battle involving the forces of good and evil. Although Genesis does not precisely state how evil enters the supposed to be good world, it describes how Adam and Eve introduce the idea of disobedience to God into creation. God in turn created unnatural curses on the future of humanity. These curses, including men to toil in the field, women to be ruled by their husband and experience excruciating pain during child birth, and the inevitable death of all creation, were meant to punish Adam and Eve for their sinful actions. As time advanced and sin expanded, humans eventually deviated so far from good that they started trusting in and worshipping other so-called divine beings. The record of the beginning of humans gradually developed to correspond with the life of transgression, violence and these new convictions. This can be seen explicitly in the movie â€Å"NOAH†. In this movie, the opening scenes make it apparent that God created humans to be good. Because mankind was becoming too sinful, God called upon Noah to build an ark that can sustain the flood that He would create to wipe out the human race. â€Å"NOAH† is a cinematic train wreck that expresses the de-creation story put in action by God. Certain scenes in this movie express how the human race has become nothing but violent. The main character, Noah, even states that he, along with his family, has the darkness inside him. This can be seen through the savagery toward animals and the treatment of women and children throughout the movie. In Genesis, God set a moral standard by which the human beings must live. Although, in the Bible, we know that both humans and animals have become violent, â€Å"I have decided to put an end to all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them.† (Genesis 6:13), ‘Morality' in other animals is simply their instincts. This can add to the claim in the movie that animals are entirely innocent and require protection from the immoral actions of humanity. Genesis places human life in accordance with the life of animals. The first story places the creation of mankind on the same day, day six, as the creation of animals. In â€Å"NOAH† there is an essential division between humans and animals. Instead of saving the human race, God orders Noah to bring two of each species on earth onto the arc to save the animal species. He does this because there is the idea that animals acquire an innocence that human beings clearly do not. This stresses that God saw animal kind as innocent and, in a way, above humans. In the first Genesis story, God created human beings to fill the Earth and order it. â€Å"God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.'† (Genesis 1:28) This verse describes God's purpose for the human race as being fruitful while subduing the Earth. Moral Therapeutic Deism proposes an elevated view of self. It is a very individualistic deism that has the idea that God wants humans to have â€Å"good† morals. The five beliefs of Moral Therapeutic Deism are that God exists and created the world, God wants people to be good, nice and fair to each other, the central goal of life is to be happy and feel good about oneself, God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when He is needed to resolve a problem, and good people go to heaven when they die. The first belief is a direct contradiction to the Incarnation in Scripture. It holds the conviction that God made the world then pulled back from it turning away from human beings. The second belief also contradicts Scripture. Christ did not come to Earth to make unmoral men â€Å"good†. He did not come to us to reform us but to reclaim creation from the scourge of sin. Having a behaved people was not His objective. The third belief is a very self-interested idea because happiness means something different to every person. This claim that the end goal of a person's life should be to find happiness completely redefines the idea that God wants people to be nice, fair and kind considering that people can define these traits differently. In Scripture, God yearns for more than merely good behavior and occasional happiness. â€Å"Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.† (Matthew 5:19) The fourth belief also contradicts the Incarnation. God is involved in every aspect of our lives. The Kingdom of Heaven, along with God, is current and present. He is exceptionally active in the life and well-being of His creation. â€Å"Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.† (Genesis 28:15) This idea that God created the world and humanity just to leave it alone can also be seen in the movie â€Å"NOAH†. Repeatedly throughout the movie, Tubal-Cain curses God and is angered by the lack of communication between God and humanity. Except for Noah, who regularly claims to see and hear signs from God, human beings felt that they were, in a way, left in the dark. This caused them to act out and eventually believe that they could do anything they wanted including savagery. The fifth belief is also considered false by Scripture. Heaven is about being present and in constant communication with God. People do not go to Heaven, Heaven comes down to us. â€Å"No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven.† (John 3:13)

Academic Strengths

Everybody has something in life that they are good at; something that person naturally has a knack for. Some people excel in athletics, for others it may be fine arts such as art or theater, for many it may be an academic subject, such as English and writing. In my case, I am considered an exception to normality. Since starting school, I have always had an exceptional aptitude for mathematics and science. It always came naturally. Throughout elementary and middle school, math was a breeze for me. It presented few challenges and I often found myself correcting my teachers instead of vice versa. However, entering high school, math classes became increasingly difficult and strenuous. Although the course work increased and became more time consuming, in the end, I adjusted well to the upper level courses I began taking. It was not until my sophomore year, that math suddenly became extremely strenuous. That year, I took Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-Ap) Algebra II with the best math teacher I have ever had, Mrs. Robison. During the first couple of grading periods, I maintained a B- average in her class. This was different, considering that I was used to having such high grades in my math classes. One day after school, I decided I would arrange a student teacher meeting to discuss my grade and the steps I would be able to take to improve it. While meeting with Mrs. Robison, she gave me some of the best advice I had ever received. She told me, â€Å"Jermyah, math comes easily for you but, if you do not study and apply yourself, your goal of having an A in this class, or any other class for that matter, will never become a reality. † From that day forward, my previously jaded outlook on math was transformed into an attitude that would allow me to get the grade I desired. The following year, I moved on to Pre-Calculus. In this class, I used everything I learned from Mrs. Robison regarding math and whenever it applied to everday life. I was to finish the class with an A average. This year I am in AP Calculus and I have the privilege of having Mrs. Robison again. I am maintaining an A in this class so far; and I look forward to exercising my greatest academic strengths everyday in her class. Another subject that I find that I excel in is science. I have found many aspects of it to be extremely interesting. For example, knowing that science is just like math, but applied to real situations, intrigues me. As mentioned earlier, similar to math, it has always come natural to me; but, different from math, I really enjoy science. Upon my entering high school, I took Pre-Ap Biology. I was fortunate enough to have a teacher that was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. I completed the class with a B+ average. My junior year, I took Pre-Ap Physics and Astronomy. My astronomy teacher has been the most passionate teacher that I have ever had It is because of him that all of my apprehensions regarding my lack of interest in the cosmos were put to the side. Mr. Austin found a way to make his passion for space, and its counterparts to rub off on me. He taught me that you will succeed naturally at what you yearn to learn for. Math and science comes naturally to me because of my interest in these two subjects. It has been a coincidence that in both of these subjects I have had two of the most inspirational teachers of my high school career. Considering the fact that math and science is involved in everyday life, it is a blessing that I am dominant in these two subjects. What more could a girl ask for?

Becoming Influential Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Becoming Influential - Essay Example Second, this could mean lower-cost and in-time PHC delivery to a broader population. Third, it will remove or at least lessen the legal barriers, caused by different state laws that hinder APNs to provide PHC (Hansen-Turton et al., 2010; Safriet, 2011). Lastly, it will give the nursing profession the due recognition that has long been denied of it. As such, I hope; my message will accomplish three things: First, it will convince our policy makers address the legal barrier that only they can resolve in order to make the Affordable Care Act truly realizable. Second, it will allay lingering fears among the general public regarding APNs’ competence and reliability as PHC providers. Lastly, it will challenge APNs to continue improving and loving their profession in order to achieve the respect and recognition they long sought for. Deciding on How to Share My Message Being an ordinary nurse, I don’t think that sending a personal letter to President Obama or anyone in the US C ongress will be influential. I believe that using the social media will be the best thing I can do to make my message most influential. I know that I am not the only one who believes that APNs should be given a wider role in the provision of PHC. Other APNs share the same belief as demonstrated by the lobbying of the American Nurses Association (Appleby, 2013). However, if lobbying for this will involve only the nursing profession, this may be perceived as self-serving. It is therefore important to get involved in this fight those who are at the receiving end of the USHCS. The time for this is right, as the recent study by the Association of American Medical Colleges' Center for Workforce Studies reveals that more people, especially the younger ones (aged 18-34 years old), prefer nurse practitioners or physician assistant (Kliff, 2013). Hence, I will appeal to these people to help APNs convince the President and the Congress to once and for all settle this legal barrier for APNs to become PHC providers. I know that the medical community, especially those who are used to the traditional physician-nurse hierarchy will speak against the competence of APNs to do this job. Yet more than this, I still believe that reason supported by empirical evidence will prove that APN-delivered care are actually at par with physician-delivered care in terms of safety and quality (O’Grady, 2008). My Message From this assignment I learned three sad realities. First, transforming the USHCS is truly difficult, because it is marred with vested interests from various stakeholders. Second, commitment and competence of APNs are not enough to ensure the provision of quality healthcare to a broader public due to legal barriers. Lastly, the important role the APNs consistently play in the delivery of safe and quality healthcare remains undervalued and unrecognized within and outside the medical community until today. This is despite the many empirical evidences affirming the equal c ompetence and reliability of APNs and despite their heightened qualifications, training, and experiences. These happen because nurses tend not to get involved
